About this internship
What The Role Is
The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) is a statutory board under the Ministry of National Development (MND). As the custodian of Singapore’s built heritage, URA is responsible for recommending buildings for conservation, regulating restoration projects, and the planning and management of heritage districts. We also promote awareness of our built heritage and best practices in restoration and management of the buildings.
Through our built heritage, we aim to connect the past, present and future generations of Singaporeans.
This role will be an internship under CUDG.
What You Will Be Working On
As an intern with the Conservation Department, you will be part of the team to support ongoing studies and surveys of Singapore’s conservation areas and buildings.
You will work closely to support our professional team of Architects and Planners. Your responsibilities will include:
Conduct use surveys of the Historic Districts (Chinatown, Little India, Kampong Glam, Boat Quay) and assist the Historic District teams in the study of the ‘heartware’ of the nation's cultural and heritage precincts.
Conduct surveys of the building features in the Conservation Areas and support the ongoing Conservation Guidelines review.
Learning Outcomes
As the work involves close collaboration with the planners and architects of the Conservation Department, interns who have successfully completed their internship will gain knowledge and understanding of the following:
URA’s role as the Conservation Authority and the “3R” principles (Maximum Retention, Sensitive Restoration and Careful Repair) in guiding the work of conservation in Singapore.
Understand that historic buildings and districts give us a visual and physical link to Singapore’s past in our changing urban landscape, and conservation is more than just preserving a facade or the external shell of a building.
The importance of retaining the inherent spirit, original ambience and heritage trades of historic buildings as far as possible. Which requires an appreciation and understanding of the architectural structure of the buildings, good place management, planning and practice in conserving buildings.
The different ways in which the rich heritage of the conservation areas can continue to be celebrated and enriched through purposeful policy implementation.
