    About this internship

About Nexstrom Nexstrom is a Singapore-based deep-te ch company building the materials foundation for the next era of semiconductors. Silicon is approaching its physical limits, and the industry's path forward runs through atomically thin 2D semiconductors — materials that until now have lived in research labs, not fabs. Nexstrom is closing that gap: we grow single-crystal 2D semiconductor wafers on production-ready tools that we built, turning demonstrated lab results into manufacturable technology. We're a small team of scientists and engineers working at the frontier of materials science, and we're looking for people who want to help take a new class of semiconductors from lab to fab. Who are we looking for? You're in the final year of a Bachelor's degree, or completing (or have just completed) a Master's degree, and have spent real time at the bench — running a furnace, a deposition tool, or another hands-on setup during your thesis or final-year project. You're curious about how equipment actually works, you keep careful notes, and you'd rather ask a question early than guess. You want a six-month internship where your work goes straight into wafers we deliver to customers — and, if it's a good fit both ways, a path into a full-time Process Engineer role. Responsibilities 1. Production Delivery Run production growth runs (about 3 runs per 8-hour day) on one of our CVD systems, following established recipes and SOPs alongside senior engineers Handle wafer loading/unloading, pre-run tool checks and routine tool upkeep Watch process parameters — temperature, gas flow, pressure — during each run and flag anything that looks off straight away Follow safety procedures for cleanroom operation and process-gas handling 2. QC Reporting & Data Analysis Compile the QC report for each delivery — collecting characterization results and checking every wafer against customer specifications Keep detailed run logs and track parameter and result trends from run to run Analyze run data to spot drift early, and share what you find with the team in a clear, simple way 3. Training Documentation Prepare training material on how our tools work — e.g. the working principle of key parts such as vacuum pumps, pressure control, mass-flow controllers and heating zones Help turn day-to-day know-how into clear SOPs and onboarding guides for the next person Ideal Profile Bachelor's or Master's degree (graduating 2027 or recently graduated) in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or a related field, with a hands-on experimental thesis or final-year project Communicates openly — shares your own view and the reasoning behind it, listens to other views, and once the team agrees on a direction, commits to it fully Collaborative and easy to work with — happy to pitch in wherever the team needs it in a small group Adaptable — direction can change a few times a week as we learn; you re-align quickly rather than getting frustrated Careful and organized — follows procedures precisely and keeps meticulous records Basic understanding of vacuum, gas-flow and temperature control fundamentals — or a strong drive to learn them fast Comfortable working with data in Excel or Python Available for six months, January to June 2027, for up to 16 hours a week Bonus: Hands-on experience with CVD, ALD, PVD or another vacuum-based deposition tool Experience with thin-film characterization (e.g. Raman, PL, optical microscopy) Prior cleanroom or process-gas safety training Why Join Nexstrom “To change what’s possible, we have to question the limits we’ve accepted.” — Dr. Lance Li, Co-Founder Nobody has solved this yet. Growing 2D materials on 12-inch wafers at yields a fab will accept is an open problem the whole industry needs answered — and we are close. Real hardware, real wafers, real partners. We shipped commercial wafers in 2026. You will not be building slideware. Semiconductor industry depth. Our team and advisors bring experience from TSMC, imec and Applied Materials. In a team our size, you work with them directly, not through three layers. Well-backed. Nexstrom is backed by Xora Innovation, SEEDS Capital and Foothill Ventures, with US$15M raised. A real path to full-time: interns who meet the bar over the six months are offered a full-time Research Engineer role.
